CONGRATULATIONS TO MARTIN AND THE TEAM AT WAKEFIELDS SMARTER HOME TECHNOLOGY FOR THIS MONTH'S DOLBY ATMOS 9.2.4 HOME CINEMA INSTALLATION.
When the team at Wakefields surveyed the client's home, they were asked to install a cinema into a large garage space. Calling on their many years of experience, the team felt the garage would be too big for an intimate movie experience, so they went about finding a more suitable space.
Although the client had already been quoted for a cinema system, it was significantly under specified, so the team set about putting together the correct room design with associated products. To deliver a fantastic cinematic experience, everything from sound and picture to comfort and aesthetics has to be taken into consideration.
The fabric panelled walls allowed the surround sound speakers to be placed accurately in reference to the listening position. A matching section across the rear glass wall allowed the team to add the rear surround speakers behind, as well as a concealed Lutron curtain track to remove the harsh sound reflections from the glass.

TECHNICAL DESIGN & SUPPORT
Artcoustic's heat map modelling ensures that we know the output capabilities for each speaker in the system, allowing us to ensure we meet the strict Dolby references of 105db for each of the LCR, 99db for the surrounds and 115db for the subwoofers in the listing positions. It also shows variation between seats to help design a better experience for all. In this case, the 124db output for the centre channel allows for 9db of headroom to EQ the perfect curve, and still easily hit the reference 105db output.
Our specialist software helps to predict the acoustic properties of the room, ensuring that the subwoofer placement works in practice. Cancellations with nulls in bass can destroy the experience, and prove almost impossible to correct with EQ. Taking care of this at the design stage create integrity and credibility very early in the process with the client, and always results in a better result at the calibration end.
Knowledge of the loudspeakers dispersion characteristics is also a vital part of the design process, ensuring the audio is focussed on the audience, with minimal room interaction. We have detailed polar responses available for all models, helping us to recommend the right product for the right application.
